MUA Submission to the Department of Industry Science & Resources

‘Roadmap to establish an Australian decommissioning industry’

The Government’s 2023 budget provided $4.5 million to assess and plan for a domestic decommissioning industry. The MUA has been actively contributing to this planning by consulting on the ‘Decommissioning Industry Issues Paper’ (access here), which laid out the government’s priorities and was the basis for stakeholder submissions (read the MUA and CFMEU’s combined response here).

Our submission set high expectations for the adequate training of skilled workers, provision of dismantling yards and co-ordination of specialist vessels.

Thanks to all the input from our allies and recommendations from Professor Tina Soliman-Hunter at Macquarie University.  This collective expertise and the respectful working relationship with the Department will ensure the MUA advocates to the highest capacity, and positions members exceptionally well in having access to quality union jobs, in a safety prioritised work environment over the coming energy transition.
